Think You Can’t Prepare for English? Think Again! Here’s How Learning Point Makes It Possible

A Learning Point student participating in an Excellence In English class.

Many students (and parents) think English is a subject you can’t really “study” for—it’s often seen as a skill you either have or don’t. At Learning Point, we believe otherwise. English is not just about instinct or natural flair; it’s a subject that can be systematically studied and mastered with the right tools, techniques and guidance.

Here’s how we help our students succeed in writing, reading, speaking and listening.

Building a Strong Foundation: General Knowledge & Themes

To excel in English, having a broad understanding of common themes is crucial. Topics like education, community, sports and more often appear in composition and oral exam questions. That’s why we integrate these themes into our lessons at Learning Point.

Our students engage with current events related to these themes, enabling them to expand their general knowledge while learning to connect ideas and form opinions. This not only improves their writing but also gives them great content during oral exams.

Mastering Composition Writing

Creative writing isn’t about guessing what works—it’s about understanding structure, purpose and clarity. At Learning Point, we teach students how to break down questions, brainstorm effectively and craft compelling narratives. With practice and feedback, they learn to write stories and essays that stand out.

We also provide frameworks to help students start, build and end their essays in a compelling way!

Handling Synthesis & Transformation

Knowing the different level-appropriate Synthesis and Transformation rules is crucial for scoring well in Paper 2. Our curriculum places Synthesis and Transformation lessons in a structured manner, starting with the technicalities of the rule before students practise combining sentences or changing sentence structures.

Our worksheets include detailed notes that can be used as reference material at home to help students reinforce the skills learnt in class. For the graduating Primary 6 cohort, we also have a Synthesis and Transformation assessment book for purchase to provide extra practice.

Managing Comprehension Cloze

Comprehension Cloze passages test a student’s mastery of phrasal verbs, understanding of collocation and use of literary devices. Our curriculum focuses on two key skill sets for Comprehension Cloze passages:

  • How to approach the passage

  • Identifying clues that link to the different answering techniques

Techniques for Tackling Comprehension

Comprehension passages may vary, but the techniques for answering questions remain consistent. We teach our students:

  • Answer structuring: How to organise their thoughts clearly and logically.

  • Question analysis: Identifying what the question is really asking.

  • Answer precision: Crafting responses that are direct and accurate.

These skills ensure that no matter the passage, students can approach comprehension questions with confidence.

Preparing for Oral Exams

Speaking well under pressure is a skill that can be taught. At Learning Point, we guide our students in:

  • Generating ideas on the spot for common oral exam themes

  • Organising their thoughts clearly before speaking

  • Using effective vocabulary and expressions to express themselves fluently and persuasively

Our Secondary Curriculum

At the secondary level, English is about more than just the language! In both the mainstream and IP streams, students need to carry over what they’ve learnt in primary school, such as good grammar and punctuation, and combine it with interesting and fluent expression.

They also need to be able to read between the lines in a variety of texts and stay updated on world issues and current affairs.

We build on primary school skills like reading for understanding, looking for clues and honing answer precision, while adding higher-level abilities. For example, students are taught how to make educated inferences when reading complex texts and how to structure and write essays that are interesting, logical and persuasive.

At the same time, we discuss current affairs and big world events, teaching students how to build content and incorporate it into their writing so that their arguments are well supported.

Learning Point’s secondary school students are well-equipped to communicate their opinions using key language techniques and a strong vocabulary. We provide them with the skills to handle any challenge thrown their way, even amid the changing syllabus or unexpected question types.

Why It Works

Our structured approach gives students the confidence and skills they need to tackle any question, whether it’s in writing, reading, listening or speaking. By equipping them with strategies and exposing them to diverse topics, we help them excel not only in exams but also in real-world communication.

At Learning Point, doing well in English is no longer a mystery.
